Terminus: I can't tell where I end and you begin
Beirut Art Centre (2009)
This site-specific installation creates a ceiling-less room made from locally sourced second-hand doors. The doors are fully functional; hung on a frame, each door can be opened, closed, sometimes even locked, and are intended to be traversed by the viewing public. Each door brings with it it’s own past-life; a history of place, purpose and people.
This interactivity results in a dynamic transitional space. It is a permeable architectural membrane that simultaneously creates an recursive border, a space within a space, whilst collapsing the boundary between untouchable-art and functional-design. The structure offers scaffolding for metaphors of biological limits, relational boundaries and geographic borders. It is a meditation of opportunities and barriers, beginnings and endings, transitions and transformations, journeys and destinations. It asks its audience to consider the mundane portals they access thoughtlessly and profound thresholds that have fundamentally changed their trajectory.
Terminus was first created in 2008 for the Fine Art Graduate Exhibition at the University of Reading (now the Reading School of Art) and recreated anew in 2009 for the Beirut Art Centre’s curated group exhibition ‘Exposure’. It’s position in the main BAC exhibition space offered a new dimension of architectural playfulness. Situated between supporting pillars of the lightwell created by the first floor mezzanine, voyeurism entered the interactive dialogue.
